Parking
On the day I visited, the parking lot was quite busy, but I managed to find a spot. The daily parking fee is €3,-. It’s convenient that there’s a restaurant and restrooms available before you start the hiking trail or the via ferrata. Take advantage of these facilities!
On the parking lot, there’s a small wooden hut where you can rent a Via Ferrata sets if you don’t have your own climbing gear. Since the beginning of the route is a bit of a walk from here, you can choose to put on your gear later.
What’s great about this route is that you don’t have to backtrack the same way. You climb up using the waterfall and then descend via the hiking trail. Along the way, you can enjoy various beautiful viewpoints that the hiking trail offers.
From the parking lot, it’s easy to follow the signs to the waterfall, and eventually, the “via ferrata” route is clearly marked with the first crossing over the water.
The Via Ferrata
At the start, the first obstacle becomes immediately visible. A short crossing over the water. From here, it’s a challenging climb upwards with various small obstacles.
From start to finish, the route creates an exciting and steadily building adrenaline rush!
There are enough resting points available for both the hiking and Via Ferrata routes. After ascending a bit through the trees, you reach a rock wall (the side of the waterfall), where you can see the steps going up quite a distance. It’s a beautiful steep climb with sturdy footholds and handholds aplenty.
Once you reach the top, you get closer and closer to the waterfall, entering the most breathtaking part of the route. From here, you can already enjoy the wild splashes of water while climbing down alongside the waterfall.
When you finally reach the top of the waterfall, a fantastic rope bridge awaits, spanning over the waterfall.
And you can feel that refreshing breeze from the water!
At the Top of the Waterfall
Once you reach the top of the waterfall, the Via Ferrata comes to an end. Here, you can take off your climbing gear, but don’t rush down immediately! You’ve arrived at a truly beautiful part of the waterfall. As you can see in the photos, the water flows through the rocks here, creating stunning scenes. So, don’t forget to savor the exquisite, unspoiled beauty of the surroundings.
Camping Recommendation
We stayed at ‘Camping Rudi,’ a peaceful and well-maintained campsite. The advantage of this was having a fixed base to explore two different via ferrata routes nearby. Driving to these via ferratas, including the Simmswasserfall via ferrata, was easily manageable from this campsite. We also appreciated the presence of clean and well-maintained toilets and showers here.
