Burgenklettersteig Manderscheid
A ViaFerrata around the castles of Manderscheid
Here it is! After previously posting on TikTok (Ronijscoman) that I was at the BurgenKlettersteig location but couldn’t climb due to the rain, I returned here because it was back on my route and still on my bucket list. This time, I managed to complete Stages 1, 2, and 3 all in one day. What a victory! The BurgenKlettersteig ViaFerrata is located in the beautiful castle town of Manderscheid

Start here
From the campsite, I walked on with my bag and climbing gear to the information point in the village (Kirchstr. 12, 54531 Manderscheid). If you ask me, this is where the route begins! Here, everything was explained to me (even in my own language), and I was given a map of the different stages. You can also rent a climbing set here if you don’t have one. Ready to start the first stage!
Stage 1 – Lieser
From the information point, follow the signs to Stage 1 (Etappe 1)and take a short walk through the beautiful landscape of Manderscheid with a view of the castles.
Once you reach the route, you’ll see the Via Ferrata running alongside the water and the rocks.
The route continues along the water and eventually leads back to a hiking trail that takes you over a bridge to Stage 2 or the parking lot.
Stage 2 – Oberburg
The route begins along a narrow path with incredibly beautiful views. The initial part of the route is quite easy, but then you reach a steep rock. This part is steep and thrilling!

Once at the top, you can enjoy the view of the path you came from. The difficulty level can be found at the bottom of the page. The route ends at the castle where you can also walk to the top of the castle for free.
Stage 3 – Niederburg
The most challenging route! Note that this route can be bypassed if you want to skip the first difficult and exhausting section. You can also start this stage at the base of the suspension bridge if you prefer to avoid the initial challenging part. If you are new to via ferrata, it’s recommended to try Stage 1 and 2 first.
First Part
This route starts relatively difficult with sections rated C/D, which can require a considerable amount of effort in the arms. Here, you climb along the water with beautiful and challenging technical sections. The great thing is that people can watch you climb from the grassy area, creating some beautiful pictures.
Bridge Between the Castles
Approximately halfway through this route, you’ll reach the narrow suspension bridge. It’s always thrilling when you place your first foot on the bridge and it starts to sway a little! What a magnificent view! Wow. Burgenklettersteig Suspension Bridge on Stage 3.
Final Part
After crossing the bridge, you encounter several steep sections rated C/D, leading to the route’s end at the beautiful ‘Burgenklettersteig’ cross.
Accommodation
I parked my bus at the ‘Vulkaneifel‘ campsite, where I had stayed on a previous occasion. The campsite is very convenient for me in this area because you can park in a spot right away. At the reception, you can fill out a registration form even if no one is present.
