Austrian via ferrata Simmswasserfall
The Austrian Via Ferrata Simmswasserfall is the first via ferrata we tackled this holiday, and it was absolutely stunning! We set out from ‘Camping Rudi,’ situated between this route and the ‘Stuibenwasserfall Via Ferrata.’ It’s perfect for exploring multiple via ferrata routes without having to travel too far. As we walked towards the start of the via ferrata route, we encountered a breathtaking suspension bridge along the way. Although not part of the route, this is definitely worth a visit via the hiking trail!

Parking
This via ferrata route is located in the Lechtal area in Tyrol, Austria. It’s a stunning and peaceful environment nestled among the mountains. We parked our car in the village of “Holzgau.” The parking lot can be found by typing the following address: “Holzgau 57, 6654 Holzgau.” When we visited we had to search for an available parking space.
Therefore, it’s advisable to arrive early for this route. Additionally, parking is also available across the water in the paid parking areas
To the via ferrata
It is advisable to eat and drink beforehand since there are few resting points along the route. This way, you don’t have to carry the load throughout the entire climb. From the parking lot, follow the water uphill into the mountains, where you’ll then walk under the high suspension bridge. Along the way, you’ll encounter small streams of crystal-clear water straight from the mountains, perfect for refilling your bottle.”
I am always amazed by how incredibly delicious the water tastes straight from nature!
Eventually continue following the hiking trail along the water, and you can already see the large via ferrata rock with a waterfall in the distance. It is truly stunning to observe those ‘little men’ climbing up the side of such a massive rock. The viaferrata route starts here at the information board, so go ahead and take your climbing gear out of your bag!
Via ferrata route
The waterfall and the rock face you’re looking at are also the entire via ferrata route! Once you start this route, there aren’t many resting points to sit down. Somewhere halfway through the route, there’s a chance to rest on a bench and take a look at the entire route from above.
Difficulty Levels
There are multiple difficulty levels available, and you can choose how challenging you want it to be. You can opt for the long route, but it’s also possible to skip some difficult sections. Generally, there are plenty of staples and points on the wall to stand on and hold onto. Signs and arrows on the wall indicate the difficulty level of the upcoming section.
At the end of the route, you can choose the D difficulty level once more. This one is more physically demanding, with some overhanging sections, and it ends back at the starting point.
Twice Over the Waterfall
The Austrian Via Ferrata Simmswasserfall crosses the waterfall not once, but twice! Climbing this route takes you to many beautiful spots that you wouldn’t typically see, and you can truly feel the power of the water from the waterfall.
So awe-inspiring, feeling the cool breeze of cascading water as you climb above the waterfall.
